Nursing

School has certainly sped up!! These next few weeks will be very busy for me, with lots of nursing papers, projects and shaddowing experiences coming up. I currently have 3 classes, worth a total of 18 credits. I'm in a Maternity and Reproductive Health Course (aka OB) with a clinical, a Pediatric course with a clinical, and a Research class.

Clinicals and classes have been going well overall. I've been learning a lot, and I'm feeling much more comfortable in the hospital. I saw my first birth in my OB clinical last week, and it was so exciting! I love seeing all the little babies and watching the families interact. My pediatric clinical has also been going quite well. I've mostly had teenage patients, which has been fantastic! Hopefully the next two weeks will go smoothly, and I'll have a pleasant coast to thanksgiving break!

Hello!

Hi! I'm really excited about this opportunity to start this blog with the University of Michigan's Alumni Association. I've never blogged before, so this should definitely be an adventure!

I'm a junior nursing student from Naperville, IL (a suburb outside of Chicago). Career wise, I'm very interested in health policy and changing the way the American health care system works, especially in relation to minorities and other disadvantaged groups. This past summer I had the fantastic opportunity to work in Washington DC as a Congressional Black Caucus Foundation intern in Senator Obama's office. This was a glimpse into my future career, and I loved the experience!

For fun, I enjoy cooking, though unfortunately living in the dorms doesn't provide too much opportunity to create dishes, try new ingredients, and bake brownies (my favorite!). I also love reading magazines (Newsweek is my fave), shopping, watching Oprah, having spontaneous dance parties, going out to dinner with the girls, and all things political.

Hm...on campus, I'm pretty involved, though I'm trying to keep my activity list under control (for fear of over-extending myself!). But, I really enjoy my activites. Well, first off, I'm a proud member of the Shipman Society. I am also in the Student Nurses Association, a mentor to 3 freshman nursing students, a member of both the UHS Student Health Advisory Committee and the Career Center Advisory Committee. I'm also begining to work on my honors project for nursing. I'm working with a really cool project called the Roadmap Project, which overall works to reduce preterm birth levels for African American pregnant women. I'm working on a policy-related part of the project, helping to plan a conference in DC this February.

So, thats pretty much a snapshot of who I am and what I'm up to on campus. I hope to write at least weekly, and keep everyone up to date about whats going on, what i'm thinking about, and anything thats fun to share! Have a good week....GO BLUE!
